You may have noticed that many people who are thinking of buying a new LCD Television target big displays; buying a 40 inch television is now common. Most people would buy a television with a screen size between 32 and 42 inches.
If we compare this with the buying habits of the past decade or so, the difference is amazing. The size of lcd televisions in demand has gone up sharply with the advent of liquid crystal display technology; as soon as prices began to drop and LCD Televisions became more affordable in larger screen sizes then it was a matter of time before start seeing sales booming, especially above 40 inches.
But this is too much; it is over-consumption. Bigger screens are expensive; they need large rooms in order to fit and perform adequately and also consume large amounts of energy. Moreover, it almost certain that most of the day they will remain inactive or if they are active, they will broadcast programs and stations with low quality transmission technology – how many stations broadcast their signal on HDTV in your country? Or how many stations broadcast three-dimensional movies and shows?
So – taking it a bit personally – the point is that by buying a large display most of the money is spent on actually satisfying yourself that you have a large display LCD Television and nothing else. Yes, it does look very attractive in the show room or the e-shop’s Web page, but the only reason for buying it is because of the ‘I want one of these!’ feeling that you get when you see it.
It would help if you try to think of the alternatives; with the same money you could buy two smaller lcd televisions, or a smaller television and a huge computer monitor-23 inches and upwards. This is a more sensible path to follow, because you will devote some of your time watching television and some of your time working on your computer. So it will be a better investment; it will not satisfy you initially as much as the purchase of the 50 inch LCD television you were dreaming for the past two months, but it will worth the investment, it will be cheaper and it will cover your display needs completely.
So it is not about going for a 20 inch television; but a 32 inch television is more than adequate to satisfy their daily television watching routine. Of course, in the end it is up to the consumer and their needs. If they want to setup a home theater then of course they will end up buying a 50 inch television and hang it on their wall. If they want to setup a presentation system then the more inches the better. But for those who just wish to spend two salaries in buying a large size television, some rational thinking and some convincing will do them good and save them money.
