The Pen Faulkner Award is a prestigious award for a work of fiction by living American author that is annually awarded by the PEN/Faulkner Foundation to the works judged the best of the year. Reportedly the largest peer-juried award in the US, it includes a payment of $15 000 to the winner, and four runners-up also receive $5 000 each. The foundation also pays for both the winner and the runners-up to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the award ceremony and give a reading from their fiction at the the Folger Shakespeare Library, in whose Great Hall the reading takes place. The PEN/Faulkner Foundation was spawned by William Faulkner generously donating in 1949 his Nobel Prize winnings “to establish a fund to support and encourage new fiction writers”; and in 1979 Mary Lee Settle became one of the cofounders following the controversial National Book Award of that year. The Foundation and its Award are also in affiliation with the International PEN writers’ organization.
